Sun damage
Sun damage to the skin occurs as a result of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV rays can cause various harmful effects on the skin, leading to both short-term and long-term damage.
Here are some of the ways sun exposure can impact the skin
- Sunburn
Short-term damage includes sunburn, characterized by red, painful, and sometimes blistered skin. Sunburn occurs when the skin is overexposed to UVB rays.
- Premature Ageing
Long-term exposure to UV radiation can lead to premature aging of the skin, often referred to as photoaging. This can result in the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and a loss of skin elasticity.
- Sun Spots or Age Spots
Prolonged sun exposure can contribute to the formation of sun spots or age spots, which are flat, brown, or grayish patches on the skin.
- Actinic Keratosis
Actinic keratosis is a rough, scaly patch on the skin that may be a precursor to skin cancer. It is often caused by prolonged sun exposure.
