Melasma
Melasma is a common skin condition characterised by the development of brown or gray-brown patches on the face, particularly on areas that are exposed to the sun. While it doesn't cause any physical harm, melasma can be a cosmetic concern for many individuals. It is more prevalent in women than men and is often associated with hormonal changes.
What can cause Melasma?
- Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, play a significant role. This is why melasma is common during pregnancy (chloasma) and in women taking hormonal contraceptives.
- Sun Exposure: UV rays stimulate the production of melanin, and sun exposure can worsen existing melasma and trigger its development.
- Genetics: Individuals with a family history of melasma are more likely to develop the condition.
